Who Is More "In Touch" With Real Americans?
Two Cents - Your Two Cents!

If a candidate for President or VP profess to be a man or woman of the people, fighting for the common, everyday Americans and their economic concerns, are their spending habits and those of their spouse’s fair game for criticism? McCain/Palin have dubbed Obama an elitist, yet he wears off the rack suits and has holes in his shoes; his wife’s dress, which she wore for her speech was $900. McCain’s suits are considerably more expensive and his shoes are $600 a pair; Cindy McCain wore a $3000 dress and over $300,000 worth of jewelry.

Question: When all is said and done, which Presidential candidate do you think is most in touch with everyday folks?

Real Americans don't forget how many houses they own. Real Americans can't afford to wear a house or the jewelry equivalent thereof. Real Americans don't name their kid "Trig".
It’s obvious? To real Americans

How many of us can afford $600 a pair shoes? Off the rack and $900 dresses is even a stretch, but it’s much closer than $3000. Sorri McCain most Americans know how many houses they have, it’s only one and it’s probably 4 months away from foreclosure if another automaker shuts down!!! smilies/cry.gif

Remember, we live in a democratic-CAPITALISTic society! Election campaigns are conducted spending millions of dollars, and we never seem to expect the candidates to shop at the local Goodwill. We do, however, expect the president-to-be to uphold the needs of the general populace in office. I'd be happy to see the return of stumping from the back of train cabooses, but that's not the world we live in. Don't start polishing your guillotines yet!

McCain and Palin are more in touch with and better understand the concerns of most people; Obama and biden represent the same old, same old tired, failed solutions--more government--that are part of the problem.
I think the big question is, when was the last time a poor person gave anyone a job?
written by Tracee, September 08, 2008
Anyone who thinks that either of these men care about poor people or the middle class they are crazy. Obama did not grow up poor and black. He grew up in the world of Acadamia which is not rich or poor, white or black. His mother was a college professor which explains his so far to the left ideologies. Obviously McCain was an elitist jerk until the Vietnamese broke him down and made him realize he was only human. The only one on either ticket who understands the plite of Joe average or Patty poor is Sarah Palin. Who's side is she on? The one who was broken by people who hate Americans. While John and Cindy McCain(I believe that Cindy is the one with most of the money), have lots of money that doesn't mean that they don't have integrity and character. I think the big question is, when was the last time a poor person gave anyone a job? Maybe if we stop taxing the poop out of the rich and corporations there would be plenty of jobs to go around. If anyone thinks that Obama's tax hikes aren't going to effect the middle and poor classes they need to get educated quickly.

How contrived is it that Obama has "holes" in his shoes. Wow, I really identify with him now!!! He doesn't HAVE to have shoes with holes in the soles or wear off the rack anything -- wonder why the Democrat politician Obama chooses to do that -- what a regular guy!! As far as who is more in touch with the public -- I'll place my bet on a former POW and a mother who lives in a "house" (not a mansion) with a trampoline in the backyard over the son of a college professor (who by the way has not voting history) and a professional politician who has such lofty ideals that he criticizes Obama as inexperienced until that magic day when he is chosen to be the VP candidate. Why isn't anyone talking about how Mr. Biden's views changed so dramatically??? His views changed because he's a politician and once he was offered a prize, he stopped criticizing -- yeah, he really cares about the people.

Clothing is superficial, Clothing and jewelery don't vote or sign bills to make them laws. Mrs. McCain comes from old money. I doubt highly that she even bought that dress. Designers loan couture to any one of affluence gender non specific. So do the top jewelery designers. So lets stick to the facts. When it comes to voting in the senate Obama votes present 80% of the time if not more. While McCain votes yea or nae. Lets look at the records any one can look at these they're open to the public. As far as running mates go Palin is the only person on the ticket that has made executive decisions. Gather the facts for yourselves and don't let the media sway you! smilies/wink.gif

Obama has lived rich and poor. He has worked with the poor and has helped them get a better life. McCain has never wanted for a nickel in his life! Cindy MCain doesn't impress me with her designer clothes. I am tired of hearing about Sarah Palin's "executive decisions". She does what she wants so her decisions are to her advantage. I can't stand her whiny voice and snarky, sarcastic putdowns. I think her flame will burn out before November.

If McCain had worked hard for the money, I wouldn't care how much he has. But he married "old money." If he can't even remember how many homes he owns, how can he ever remember us, the people he is supposed to be representing?!?! And I don't care WHO bought the homes!

I don't think Obama wearing shoes with holes is a sign of anything, other than maybe they are really comfortable while standing, or maybe he just hasn't had time to go buy a new pair and break them in.

I keep hearing how not being a vet or POW means lack of empathy. Maybe, JUST MAYBE Barack Obama fell into an age group that just didn't get called up. I'm sorry McCain was made a prisoner of war, but that doesn't make him good president material. Makes me a lot more nervous about what kind of "eye gouging" Mccain will get us into in a covert way of "payback."

Based on what I'm hearing, Obama is so much more in touch with "normal" Americans that there really isn't any comparison. Obama gives me hope for a brighter future.

Didn't hear the Democrats whinning when Theresa Heinz Kerry was up there in all her glory - now that's elite!

If we knew the real story of Barack, we might be able to comment, but since the video that was shown was a distortion of the truth, we cannot comment since we don't have all the facts of his history. If he was that poor, how did he fund his Harvard education - and what are his Muslim ties? Someone answer that for me since no one is allowed to directly answer.

I guess I really don't care what they wear -- I care about what they will do. I'm afraid that a McCain presidency would just be more of the same Bush policies that have been totally disastrous for this country! And frankly, Sarah Palin scares me!! Look at her actual record -- yes, she has executive experience but her decisions have been decidedly self-serving and her experience in other areas is sadly lacking. She's a small town woman who talks big, but can't back up her claims. If McCain were elected, she would be a heartbeat away from the presidency and that's truly terrifying!! And I agree with CJG about McCain's experience as a POW -- he certainly has courage and did serve our country in the military, but that does no make him presidential material! Please dig below the surface and look at the candidates (all four of them) and where they stand on the issues and make an informed decision. Don't let who wears what and how many houses a person has make this huge decision for you.

While clothes don't necessarily "make the man" - or woman - it still seems to me that both Mrs. McCain and Mrs. Bush thumbed their noses at the American public with the designer clothes they wore the other night. While it may be true that designers often loan their clothes to people, who, in the GOP, approved those very expensive items, and did they not realize the totals involved would become public knowledge? It's one thing to have money, quite another to flaunt it. Seems to me that shows a certain comtempt for the "little people," and makes me wonder if they really are aware of what is going on out here in the real world. Whether we like it or not, the image we present to the world is basically how we are judged, no matter what anyone says. And, do we want the rest of the world to see this country's leaders, and their wives, as elitists? I sincerely hope not.
McCain & Palin understand Americans.

If you have a pre-nup with your spouse then you don't really own anything they own. And what reason would you have to keep track of it? CINDY McCain is rich. John McCain understands real Americans. Palin is a real woman facing real challenges. No contest... McCain & Palin are the ones who will SERVE America better.
Obama vs McCain

Another shallow question. This sounds like the politics of envy. Obama 'bought' a house for $300,000 below market value through a quid-pro-quo deal with Rezco, a man who has been indicted on criminal charges for his financial dealings. Once his association became known, Obama returned $80,000 to charity to compensate for his windfall gain ..... nice profit - more than enough to buy a new suit and a pair of shoes to go with it! Who cares whether he has holes in his shoes - he is a millionaire! His 'experience' for the presidency consists of his community service where he doled out millions of tax dollars in questionable charitable work, and where he served with his friend Bill Ayers, a marxist terrorist who belonged to the violent Weathermen anarchist group and who has not disavowed his violent past. What is of greater concern than Obama's clothing is his association with very questionable people and the judgment he has used in choosing his friends. They will be his advisors if he succeeds. Please look beyond appearances. Wealth is good ... coveting wealth is bad.
Watch not what they say - rather Watch what they do!!

I can't think of a more irrelevant topic to discuss about the candidates than what their clothes cost. This election is about the future of this country. What has Obama done in the senate - nothing! He votes present if at all. McCain is at least not afraid to take a stand (some of which I vehemently disagree with) and vote yea or nay.
That said, the election is about going forward and that must hinge on rebuilding the economy which in turn must hinge on a comprehensive energy policy. The most important CHANGE this country needs is to become energy independent NOW! To do this we need to use all available proven energy sources while we develop alternative energy sources to take up the slack as we deplete our finite hydrocarbons. Inflating our tires will not get it done!!!
So who's in touch with joe sixpack? McCain at least understands the pain at the pump, Obama is looking for an air compressor. Who do you think is in touch???
Do you Obama supporters always pick and choose what you comment on?

Michelle (don't criticize my wife) Obama commented that the $600 rebate on taxes this year was only enough to buy a pair of earrings and that it cost $10,000 to send her girls to music and dancing lessons is clearly in close touch with the average family. Cindy McCain doesn't wear designer clothes when she is in other countries doing real hands on work to save people. Sarah Palin has an average family and lots more executive experience than old "I never met a lobbyist I didn't like" NO executive experience Biden who thought Obama was unqualified until he got a shot at VP. 37 years in Washington certainly makes him a prime candidate for an element of change.

Obama I think. Just the very sordid and mean ways they are trying to portray him shows how frightened the right wing is of him. I wish that both parties would talk about the issues instead of arm wrestling and throwing crap at each other. If McCain and Palin win I think I will have to leave this beloved country. Bush and Cheney have almost ruined us in every way possible and my heart is broken.

Both candidates are wealthy. Who cares. The Kennedy family is wealthy and have been champions for the poor. My concern is McCain is a Bush crony who wants more of the same. Palin is a gun toting NRA member who is antiabortion anti-birth control (we know how well abstinence education works). Obama is very green but Biden has experience. Hopefully they will temper each other. Speaking of temper, I have heard McCain has a nasty one. What will happen when he is president and something happens that he doesn't like?

I want to see someone in the White House who can keep
the country safe from terrorists, who will help the economy, who will support the Armed Forces. I'm not confident that Obama can or will do any of that. Frankly, his foreign policies are dangerous. Who can negotiate with Fundamentalist Muslims?
I find Palin honest and like a breath of fresh air.
The McCain/Palin combination is a good one. I can hardly wait to see her shake up the old boys in Washington.

The campaigns manage their clothes & physical image. Look at Hilary's evolution in face, clothes & hair - who cares? Elitist egg heads like to be seen in Burkenstocks. The point is we are all given 24 hours in a day & what we do with it is what matters. What good has Barak's wife done with her time to benefit anyone outside her family? Or Biden - who's sons are under inditement for fraud & financial corruption. Obama failed at his community organization projects - what can he do on a large scale? I came from behind the "iron curtain" & don't want more socialism & government entitlement. Most of the letters sound like class envy & warfare - hello Bolshevik revolution - is that what we want for America? My mothr & I lived in a D.P.(dispalced person) camp for 5 years on a waiting list to come to America. I work hard & don't want my money redistributed to those who already don't pay taxes. I would like to see college reform with better professors who love the country they are supposed to prepare the next generation for.

The man with the holes in his shoes is a hard working man. McCain's wife is beaufiful and dressed gorgeously but at the end of the day...who cares? I care about letting the middle income people survive in this lifetime by having a house and a car and a job!! also..we spend so much on the military helping others when our own veterans can't get help! Did McCain get all his medical bills paid for by the V.A. or did he have the money to pay????!!! gEt our men home!!!
In touch with the American people
written by Stephannie Robinson, September 09, 2008
I do not believe that this is even a question. Obama is the "real" American. He came from a single parent home, had to work to get everything that he has, his wife and mother-in-law actively raise their children, Michelle Obama works, they own 1 house, drive their own cars, shop for themselves. How can you even ask when John mcCain came from a family of Admirals, automatically went to the Naval Academy because of connections, ditched his first wife and got a "trophy" wife (and hugely wealthy, as well), owns 8 homes at last count, whose wife wears $600.00 shoes and who, no doubt, does not cook meals herself. Are you kidding me?
OBAMA is a man of the people, for the people and by the people, and he will make an extraordinary President of the United States of America. Go, Barack !

John McCain was cetainly "one of the people" when he suffered as a war captive; he and his wife have a heart for children and children with special needs. They are partriots; Obama's wife proclaimed that she wasn't proud to be an American until hubby was named for the Democrats. McCain has a history of loving America. I have only read the two comments above mine and my respect goes to small business owner. People ought to listen to such voices. Obama's background impresses me; it scares me.

Are you serious? Does Barack really have holes in his shoes? That doesn't make him more in touch with me. I am pretty ordinary amd middle class and I would never wear shoes with holes in them. It really isn't out of the average household's means to have a pair of shoes repaired. Michelle could have spent a little less on her dress and should have had her husband's shoes resoled!

Obama has a real understanding of the lives that people all over america really lead. McCain probably thinks he is in touch, but he is not. The selection of Palin as his running mate emphasizes the lack of awareness of critical issues. I believe he picked Palin in an attempt to attract voters who supported Hillary Clinton. His approach is insulting to women all over the world. How could he dare to compare Palin to Hillary Clinton or even expect that someone who would vote for Hillary would even CONSIDER voting for him.He picked a chick who was a mayor of a tiny town for a few years, has been a governor for 2 years and comes from a state with a small population. Obama has the knowledge, skills experience and abilities to lead the country in the right direction.

McCAIN AND Palin are more in tune. Just look at the experience and leadership. Keep all the personal crap out of the picture it is not that information that shows you how a candidate will lead.
which real americans, the rich or the poor?
written by tiredofpolitics, September 15, 2008
if you talk to the ones with the money, mccain and palin are more in touch. they understand the rich are paying too much taxes.
if you talk to the middle class and the poor they would most likely say obama and biden. because they understand the value of education and health care and will work on making both accessible to all americans. tax rebates are nice, but where does everybody think the money is coming from. they take away federal funding for states. the states then take away funding for the counties, the cities, the towns. cities increase property taxes to compensate and so on and so forth... it trickles down.

bad temper usually means arrogance - it's my way or no way! hmmn, heard that before. look where arrogance brought us. it's true, a C student can be president of the united states, but what kind. let's bring prestige back to the oval office by voting intellectuals.

i would like to hear new speech from palin - one that's not scripted.

I don't think understanding the everyday problems facing the workers and the majority in the country is enough. It is what they mean to do to fix things. Obama's choice tells me more of the same, a VP that follows party lines like him, an economic advisor who injected politics and mismanagement to Freddy Mac and Fannie May, change? not really.
Just watch what the state of affairs was while this guy was in office a couple of years ago:
