Two Cents - Your Two Cents!
During a faculty meeting at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, Amy Bishop methodically fired shots to the heads of six colleagues, killing three and wounding three others. Bishop was apparently upset over recently being denied tenure by the university. Bishop had also accidentally (with one of three shotgun blasts) shot and killed her brother 24 years earlier. Then 17 years ago, she was questioned  by investigators about a pipe bomb sent to a former colleague who was due to give her a negative evaluation.

Question: Do you think school/university employees should be subjected to more detailed and extensive background checks than they currently are?

smilies/angry.gif THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE ARE SHOWING SIGNS OF INSANITY AND THOSE AROUND THEM CHOOSE TO IGNOR IT! SOMEONE HAD TO SEE THAT THE LIGHT WASN'T ON UPSTAIRS. IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!
Schools Need to do Better Homework

I absolutely think that schools & universities need to do more "homework," and more extensive background checks on potential employees. This was a senseless tragedy that could have been prevented.

These events do not happen in a vacuum. There had to be signs or at least very quirky behavior that would tip people off. While it is important to respect peoples rights and privacy, when some one works at or attends an institution like a university, there should be greater scrutiny.

Background checks are a good idea but evaluating them is problematic. Oft times the 'guilty' are innocent and the innocent are very guilty.

For sure keeping guns out of schools, air ports, parks and all public spaces is a VERY good idea. Georgia, however, is being pushed backwards a couple hundred years by the gun manufactures assoc [ aka NRA ] by demanding that we should all carry guns all the time to stay safe. Talk about warped logic.

There had to be signs she was unstable, but she like other unstable indivisuals it was over looked because no one wants to make waves or get involed. so many just go about their daily lives & hope all is well. As for having guns ,there should be the right to carry one as long as you have no criminal record & know the proper way to handle it.It is are right as American citizens to be able to own & carry a firearm ,if you are a American citizen . . If you see signs of someone not stable or you think is not report it to someone to be investagited better safe than sorry. But Remember GUNS. are not the only weapon that kills People... Any thing can if the will is strong enough...
Thats my two cents worth.

If only there was a way to x-ray a mind to see what is REALLY going on inside.

On the other hand, there must've been a reason she was denied tenure - perhaps signs of her instability were shining through.

And I understand that the St Pete Times reports that "accidental" murder of her brother was no accident and may have been covered up by the police, too.

But would a background check have shown any of this? There WERE background checks - they do not show mental states. Would the death of her brother have shown up? She was not prosecuted for it and it happened when she was a teenager. A background check would have shown any criminal record, but I do not think she had one. Background checks do not include psychological evaluations, and if they did we would need to remember that the results of such an eval would only be as valid as the credentials of the evaluator.

So the real question might be - before anybody is hired should they have a psychological evaluation? Should we re-evaluate every year? Every other year? Every time the employee gets bad news? What if the evaluator is unstable but is able to fool HIS evaluator?

A better indicator of this person's mental and emotional stability might've been how she treated people, small animals, children - but it's unlikely her colleagues would have known her habits outside of work and her friends and family would have been used to her and "made allowances". Following this line, do we then allow our employers to spy on us at home? And, having been caught spanking our child can we then be fired because our boss believes children should face "time outs" rather than spankings?

There is no easy answer in this situation. No matter how much time she gets in prison - and I hope she gets life - you can never take back the day that the loved ones of those murdered heard how they had died.

The warning signs were there. She had a past history of not taking rejection very well. This is not the first time, a persons past has been overlooked, and those too have way to often resulted in this type of action.smilies/angry.gif
Investivate and forget about the privacy act...

Of course they need to investigate peopple before they are hired. I thought all school professionals are to be checked for crime and child abuse. This crazy lady killed her own brother and firebombed a place. They need to investigate if she is a serial killer too. Why was she not put in an insane facility? Someone forgot to check her background. They need to also check the background of the person who hired her. They dont care either!!!

A BRAIN THAT IS OUT OF CONTROL WITH NO REGARDS FOR ITS HOST. UNFORTUNATELY FOR THE HOST. YOU PLAY THE WRONG HAND, IT IS A MISTAKE.. BUT TOMORROW YOUR BRAIN WILL CONTINUE THE WRONG PLAY BY ITSELF, WITH NO LONGER PERMISSION FROM THE HOST. YOU PUT THE TRACK DOWN. LIKE THE LIE, YOU LIE TODAY AND YOU WILL NOT STOP, THE BRAIN WILL AUTOMATICALLY CONTINUE TO LIE FOR YOU, NO LONGER KNOW WHAT IS REAL. YOU WILL STRUGGLE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE WITH THE TRUTH AND HOW TO SAY IT.
