Two Cents - Your Two Cents!

During Howard Stern's Sirius satellite show this week, co-host Robin Quivers commented that Oscar-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) should have looked around at the Oscars and noticed that none of the other working actresses looked like her. The comments made on Stern's show sparked a heated debate among moviegoers and industry observers, with some believing the shock-jock was simply saying what everyone else is thinking.

Question: Do you think that Sidibe will continue to get work in Hollywood or will her weight keep her from getting roles? And, should her weight have any bearing on whether she works or not?

She will get work

She will get work but because of her size and Hollywoods problems with it she wont be the leading woman very many of the movies she makes.

I think the weight should not be an issue and that is what is wrong with this stupid crazy world that is why so many woman battle eating disorders so they can be skinny that is such crap

Her weight and her look were as much part of the character as make up would be for any movie character. Just seeing her smile warms my heart, but that is not what all the charactoer that she can play will do. The Avatar character don't look like anyone ther either.

This is ridiculous! If you are a great actor/actress it shouldn't matter if you're fat, skinny, ugly or pretty. Some of these actors are beautiful but ugly on the inside and others are just too skinny and look sickly. I think that's ugly and unflattering. Gabourey is a great actress and yes she is heavy...that's the norm in society now. Not everyone has flat tummies, perfect hair and skin and silicone boobs. Yes, it is unhealthy but that's up to her to decide to lose weight not the media. This is the reason why our youth is becoming anoerexic and bulimic. If you love yourself, nothing else matters.smilies/tongue.gif
Size doesn't matter
written by Robert B., March 12, 2010
I don't think she'll be getting any roles casting her as an anorexic (unless it's about someone who has beat anorexia), but I don't think her weight will prevent her from getting other roles. In the end it will be her talent as an actress that determines her work, not her weight. As it should be.
Limited work
written by Tami, March 12, 2010
She will get work simply because there will be some roles that require a heavier set black woman to portray the character. However, the real question is her health. If she wants a long, heathy life; regardless if she continues to pursue an acting career, she should focus on making some life changes that will allow her to loose some weight.
Very talented
written by Diane, March 12, 2010
I don't think she will have a problem. There's always room for new talent. And she got it all. She was excellent in "Precious" I think they chose and got the right person for this part. Keep it up.

Given the narrow minded and 'skinny' fixated notions of hollywood's elite...I am sad to say, this promising young actress will be hard pressed to find other roles that merit her acting ability. Being a larger woman myself, I find that being over-weight is the last bastien of true prejudice in this country. While other prejudices are not completely gone, they have at least been addressed.

It should not play a role if she is Oscar worthy nominee however from a health stand point hoping she could lose it for a long & healthy life. Queen Latifa has done pretty good for herself being a plus size beautiful woman. Howard Stern needs to look in the mirror.. in case he did not notice he is not the most attractive man and being called the Shock Jock... maybe Shock but he is certainly NO JOCK... smilies/cool.gif

She should be able to work and not be vilified because of her weight. Just like Anne & Steve stated, she will be limited to the roles that she can get, but why make her weight a question of whether she can work or not.

However, I do wish that she can be conscious of her weight regarding her health. She is a very bright and intelligent young lady and I'd like to see her flourish in Hollywood and in life in general. Her health is at risk and I would not want to see her faulter because of it.

Go Gabby!

Unfortunately this is another example of how shallow our country has become and continues to be. What if you were drowning and this talented young woman and some friends came by in a small boat. Would you refuse her help because she didn't fit your idea of an acceptable body type?

No matter how talented (and she is) this girl is not just heavy, she is obese. This is a critical problem in this country and a huge drain on healthcare costs. Later in life, we potentially will all have to subsidize her care for diabetes, heart disease, and a myriad of other obesity related health issues. Her first focus should be on losing that weight. My problem with her weight is not aesthetic, but financial. We should all have that concern.

Programs like Sterns are created to raise blood pressure. If you don't like stupid comments and observations, don't tune in. As far as Sidibe is concerned, you go girl! I think/hope Hollywood, tho still obsessed with looks, also recognizes the wealth of talent outside the blond, blue-eyed, etc. pretty people. For some they may recognize the broader range of stories that can be told with a broader range of actors. For others, they recognize those stories have audiences, hence revenues.

Talent is what will get any actor work. Will Sidibe's weight keep her from getting work? I suppose that will depend upon the role for which she auditions. I doubt that she would get the job playing an anorexic, anymore than she would get the job if it required someone who was White, Hispanic or Oriental. Just as in life outside of Hollywood, some people will be prejudiced against her weight. That may be unfortunate; but, it is life. But, if Sidibe has talent, she will find work. I wish her well. p.s. For her health, she may wish to consider losing the extra weight or she will not be getting any roles if she has a heart-attack or stroke.

written by Wilma, March 12, 2010
I am almost positive that she Sidibe will cntinue to gain experience and growth in the industry as she is a great actress. Unfortunately, due to the stigmas and superficial system Hollywood has created...she will always be pinned in a role that will intergrate the character as large. It is very difficult to break out of such a nutshell if most scripts revolve around the sociological scope we experience today. It is not until we break free from this that actors and actresses such as she can progress based on their talent. She is talented...hands down. The question is not whether she can find work or not...it is if she can defy the odds and land roles that we would not normally see someone such as herself play?

So sad that people like Howard Stern get so much of our attention. I hope this young woman never looks around and compares herself to anyone -- she is talented and lovely in her own right, and will surely get roles that fit her talents and personality. She is young and hopefully will be able to address her health issues before they cause irreversible problems, but that is between she and her doctors. Good luck to her and kudos to her for her courage to be herself.
TALENT
written by SARAH, March 12, 2010
Talent is what you are looking for. She may have a medical condition. People just need to stop looking at the body and focus on talent. She is a very beautiful person in side and out. A person can be beautiful on the out side, but very ugly in the inside. You go girl and show them what you can do. Keep up the good work. Monique can testify to that.

How ridicuous! She is a good actress, there are plenty of rolls for overweight people (some actors have even had to gain weight for rolls) and the world is made up of all sizes of people so why wouldn't movies have all different sizes of characters? These actors and actress that are having face lifts and lips blown up look like clowns but they are doing it to get movie roles. Howard Stern is an ass and so are most of his guests.

Limited roles
written by Tim Palmer, March 12, 2010
Like it or not, right or wrong... she will be limited to character roles that call for large women. She obviously has talent and could do so much more, but Americans as a whole are over weight and do not want the leading roles in their movies to remind them of that. "Rambo"... big hit, sure wasn't for the writing or acting, rather male movie goers wanted to see themselves as that role... super athletic, macho, saving the world, action hero.... imagine if "Rambo" was 325 lbs and had to stop every 30 feet when running from the bad guys.... no, talented she is, but Hollywood will pigeon hole her until (or if) she loses weight.

Really , are u kidding me, what the hell does her wait has to do with anything she is an actress for crying out loud and she did an excellent job
On her first roll the question is why hasn't the other skinny actress that were/ is in the game take so long to master their art. IE: Sandra Bullock has been acting from I was a kid
And she is now just getting it right … It speak volumes what Gabourey did .Howard Stern is one to talk …do not have a face for TV , one of the ugliest SOB I ever saw….but he had a TV show…guess that’s why he's back on radio
Much love Gabourey Sidibe don't let them break you

She represents a milestone in History. One, she is a Full Figured African American Oscar Nominated Actress - a major accomplishment in itself. Two, she's an EDUCATED young lady who has a college degree to fall back on. Three, she has two extrodinarily strong influences in the Hollywood community in her corner - Ophra Winfrey and Tyler Perry. Did I mention she's extremely talented and very comfortable in her own skin. Now, being realistic, there are some health concerns. BUT, for now, let's just embrace this young lady's talent and let God decide her success. I'm sure she will educate herself about her weight and adjust her lifestyle to be 'healthy' not loose weight. Furthermore, whatever is destined in her life will happen. I'm proud that she's successful in the business against all odds.

Did not see the film, but I hear she was a real good actress. As such much depends on the availavility of roles that require that type of a body. Seeing our country has an epidemic of obesity chances of such roles may be better than one thinks. If she is a good actress, and I hear she is, she will do good.
Seems like people are being to politically correct and avoiding the real issue
written by Rusty, March 12, 2010
I feel the question should be not about future employment but rather a serious concern for her health. It is a serious health matter. Everybody that is saying how nice and sweet she is and how talented don't truly care, they don't want to offend and are actually enabling a disease. The odds are that she won't be a leading lady until she loses weight, in my opinion, how many lead roles require an unhealthy looking character and the few that there are can be done with a fat suit. I don't mean to insult they are called fat suits. Is diabetes worth not having to wear a fat suit and become type cast as a sad sack fat person? She doesn't need to be a skinny model, but what does her doctor say after a checkup. She might need tough love and not encouragement.

Its not about looks or weight, its about being a decent and loving human being. There are "gorgeous" actors out there who have interior ugliness. I wish her the best.
Too large, or not?
written by Roger Patterson in Texas, March 12, 2010
It's not my job to judge a person due to their weight. I'm a bit heavy myself.
Will her size prevent her from receiving job offers? Yes.
Especially those positions where one of the "pretty people" are needed.
Will she stay busy working? I should think so. She's cute and has a lot of personality. Those two indicators should keep her employed sufficiently, to keep her busy and off the streets!

Gabourey - you go girl!
just fine like she is
written by Matthew P Barrick, March 12, 2010
Her weight will limit the roles available to her but appearance is in no way a prerequisite to an acting career. Look at Catherine Bates or Rosie O'donnald and other plus size actresses who have had success. With the right roles, she should be just fine. It's not like Hallie Berry could play Gabourey's role in precious.

written by Nicey, March 12, 2010
I believe that will get roles that fit her personality and size just as she did in the movie "Precious". Her weight was the main reason that she was choosen for the role of Monique's daughter in the movie. I'm sure now that she has become a known actress she will start to work on her weight that is if she is interest in excepting more acting roles in Hollywood.

Hello All,

I think that movies are supposed to be a mirror image of the real world. And out side of all those really hungry ladies in holliwood medicating themselvs so they can't feel the hunger pains. the world I live in has big people and little people. When I see a movie ware everyone is thin with perfect hare they all dress nice their homes are spotless it really looks fake and imitation. good movies mirror the real world and in the real world some buts are bigger than others but that doesent make them any less interesting. there you go I just gave you a whole quarter, Yolanda

I've been overweight all my life....and hated it. Many opportunities were lost from that very reason, however the health issues are the biggest issue. The very LAST thing young ...especially black... women need to see as a role model is someone of her size. They are already battling more diabetes and heart disease than those with a smaller body fat ratio. This sends the message that ANY size is just fine and that someone ELSE will pay the consequences. And...yes....I think everyone who is honest is silently sad for her and for the health issues she will face. It is not "politically correct" anymore to talk about obesity and that is one of the reasons so many people ARE. The opportunities will be missed but no one will be honest and tell her why. Obesity is NOT a vanity issue; it is a health issue. That is why her size is referred to as "morbidly obese"...it WILL kill her! Opray would do her a great favor by mentoring her and helping her get a grip on her weight issues while she still has time, health and energy to tackle it; not just being her cheerleader. Many other "plus" size women have been successful and healthy but not at the "plus" level of his gal. She needs help and not just endorsements or she will end up wasting her life AND the talent she has.
Hmmm... Love Stern!!
written by SternFan, March 12, 2010
Unfortunatley no she will not,

It's sort of like midgets. They do Christmas movies as elfs that's it. She will get a role in a movie if it requires a big lady. She will enjoy her fame for the next 15mins then if someone ever writes a movie about fat albert and his girlfriend, she'll get the role! smilies/smiley.gif

Saw the movie, she was wonderful! But being realistic, I don't see her continuing her carrer. But then again, if they put douche bags like the cast of Jersey Shores on TV anyone can be on TV.
Moi
written by David, March 12, 2010
Stupid question. Of course it will affect how many roles she gets because most roles are not for over weight actresses. If weight is not a factor for the character she is playing she will, and should, have an excellent chance of getting cast.
John Candy, et al
written by Lydia, March 12, 2010
My concern is WHAT roles will she be offered? Character parts will come her way, but I wonder what kinds of characters? Will she be offered heroic roles, romantic leads, or anything beyond the mold of 'up by her bootstraps' black girls from challenging environments, who overcome outrageous odds?

I also wonder what Hollywood will do to her: will she become afflicted with the need to not just slim down and get healthy, but to teeter into anorexic?

Finaly, I escho the concerns for her health. I think of performers like John Candy and John Belushi, Nell Carter and so forth, and people who aren't famous, for whom weighing in at an excess of 350 pounds has been dangerous: diabetes, hypertension, stroke and heart attacks are no joke.
Big and Beautiful--
written by Marie , March 12, 2010
Yes, she is big and beautiful--its her talent and skill as an actress that enables her to work in the so-called "Skinny Hollywood". Gabourey Sidibe should love pound and not conform to any mold that makes this nation so freaking mental. I'm 5'7'', 130lbs and people tell I pretty enough to be a model, but model are not blind, in one eye as I am--due to the pressures on both sides it has made me self-conscious.
Representative
written by tom, March 12, 2010
Since she is so representative of so many young people today; i.e., obese to the point of severe health problems,I suspect she will get more parts--especially in kid flicks.
Big and Woman with an Oscar
written by Marilyn August, March 12, 2010
She is a big girl (should drop the nickname "Precious")and talented enough to win an Oscar. What else does she need. . . nothing! What a nice person to remember the first woman of color to win an Oscar way back in 1939 Hattie McDaniel. Big and SMART! Take that you skinny snobs . . . some people are just always jealous.
Body type has its place in casting
written by Marijack, March 12, 2010
Sean Connery spent a lot of time bodybuilding before he was selected to play James Bond. Rene Zellweger gained a considerable amount of weight to play "Bridget Jones", and then took it off for her next role. Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell were cast based on body type (one that I very much admire). I cannot see Ms. Sidibe playing a lead role in "A Streetcar Named Desire". There are not too many opportunities in film for overweight black women. "The Color Purple" comes to mind, but I cannot think of another good film. If Ms. Sidibe wants to work in film more than once every 10 years she will have to change her body type from grossly obese to pleasingly plump. Then we could enjoy her considerable acting talents every year or two. Perhaps she could spend a profitable year on TV's "The Biggest Loser" if she is unable to do it on her own.
Plain Joe
written by SweetP, March 13, 2010
As much as I would hope that the industry was beyond such discraces, as to discriminate based on wieght, the fact is that the Hollywood establishment is obsessed with good looks and weight loss. Look at how many actors have personal trainers to ensure they keep their figures in shape. The bottom line is she will continue to have issues with finding work, in spite of her accomplishments and until she is willing to accept she has a problem with weight and begins to do something about it! She can't continue to carry that much weight around and remain healthy and time will prove that, unless she does something about it studio's will not her to work for them due to the possible health risks and their liability!
It will be an Issue
written by Cindy RN, March 15, 2010
Her weight will be an issue...she is morbidly obese, though her health is the bigger issue. I hope she will take care of herself as a person no matter what the acting world holds for her. Unfortunately, getting thrown into the spotlight with all of the parties, openings, etc., her weight could actually get worse. Her roles in Hollywood will be extremely limited I am sure.

Thin Has Always Been In
written by Sue Jones, March 15, 2010
Unfortunately for many talented overweight people, Hollywood always likes skinny actresses. But there will always be a role for her talent. She just has to wait for the roles to surface.
Not Right
written by DAL, March 18, 2010
Unfortunately because of her size she is going to be very limited in the roles that hollywood has to offer her. Her weight supercedes her talent and it is not right because you have a lot of people out there that cannot act nor sing and make it because they look good
Her weight shouldn't make any difference in her movie career.............
written by Candy Martin, March 22, 2010
but because of the narrow minded people in charge of Hollywood, I don't think she'll get very many parts much less leading roles in movies. I'm afraid it will be very hard for her to make it to the star status of Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie. Look at what Jennifer Hudson had to go through before she was finally recognized?
Weight
written by Ladidy, March 24, 2010
Thank God she was the weight that she is. Her role called for a plus size girl. The movie would not have been as successful if she did not look like she does. We are obsessed with looks. But Monique and Gabby did the dog-gone-thang!!!! Both are plus size ladies!!! So forget about weight and let deal with talent, brilliance and ability.
I just hope she doesn't get type cast
written by Candy Martin, March 24, 2010
Like so many other heavy actors that I enjoyed watching through the years, like John Candy and John Belushi, I hope she doesn't turn to negative things like they did because Hollywood won't let the issue of her weight go. I think both, Candy and Belushi had insecurities about their weight because of Hollywood and the fact that the only roles they could get were comedies and never any serious parts.
