Do You Know How Many Homes You Own?
Two Cents - Your Two Cents!

Asked in an interview  Wednesday with Politico.com how many houses he owned, John McCain replied, "I think — I'll have my staff get to you." It seemed a real gaffe for a politician who is trying to paint Obama as an elitist. During a campaign appearance the next day, Barack Obama commented, "Now think about that," Obama told the crowd, "I guess if you think that being rich means you gotta make five million dollars, and if you don’t know how many houses you have, then it’s not surprising that you might think the economy is fundamentally strong. But if you’re like me and you’ve got one house," he continued, "or you're like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so that they don’t lose their home, you might have a different perspective.

Question: As a voter, what does it mean to you when a candidate can't answer a question like this?

All of you are forgetting that the president doesn't make the laws -- CONGRESS DOES! And the congress that keeps taking our money away is a Democratic congress.
Get a grip people - look at the facts.

I'm with Sandy. While the president is very important, Congress is where we need to begin to get things done. Guess what folks, all of them are elitist. They have no idea what an 8 hour day is. They don't get that some people don't get to vote themselves raises or holidays or days off. Congress gives to their favorites with no consideration of the general public. All of them make more money than many of us. This class envy crap is a red herring that has worked like a charm for years and years. Choosing a leader is more than that. Look at what they have done, with their lives and with their time in Government. Obama doesn't have a very impressive record. Yes McCain is much older but his record is quite solid and he has the balls to stand up and say what he has done and why. Gottcha politics doesn't really do much for our country, our economy or our safety. And Pam, bad news for you. It might sound wonderful to say if the government tells everyone to pay more wages or the government takes money from those deemed to "make too much" we will all be okay but that doesn't work. It is a tried and failed system. People need to have the opportunity to earn more, but they need to earn it, not have someone give it to them. The government only ever really takes away, they don't ever create. The "crisis" today is a correction that most saw coming. And it will happen again and again if we continue to pay workers too much for a product that does not have that great of value, when people are paying almost 100% more than asking price for a property and then borrowing 110% of the property value, when government rewards people for doing nothing and we as a society do not save a dime. All you folks that think the rich are awful and we should just take from them better remember that many think anyone that makes more than they do is rich. It could be your dollars that they are coming for next and just like that, you will be the evil rich!

Cheryl, I only own one home, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to own another one. John McCain may very well not know how many pieces of property his name is on, because his very rich wife may have named him as owner on some of her property, which is a separate business and hers alone. For all we know he owns rental property which is a very good investment. Also, for McCain to answer a question like that about his personal business, taking time to explain to a reporter how much property he owns, does not offer any help to the American people.
I believe McCain is concerned with the betterment of the United States of America. You might ask yourself where Obama gets his money and how many houses he has, and what is the value of them. I'd like to know how he managed to go to so many universities without ever having worked a day in his life. I did hear something about him finally paying off his college loans, but getting money for three or four colleges is a lot of money for someone like me. Who paid?? Who does he owe??

There are many celebrities that have more than one house.Having one house doesn't have anything to do with your ability to lead the country. I think Obama is just jealous.

I think McCain honestly did not know because the houses are in Cindy's name and he'd rather give an honest answer than guess. When he found out, he told the press. I'd rather have a careful, thoughtful, honest President than someone who just makes up answers and then has to go back and correct them when caught in his own lies.

How little most people must keep up with the facts about the candidates. If anyone studied McCain's life and marriage contract, his answer would make perfect sense. Cindy's ownership is totally separate from her husband's though he has the appearance of equal title. John McCain is an honorable man and true American hero. He has my vote.

It always makes me laugh how EVERY one of us strive to get ahead and make more, yet we HATE the "rich". Isn't that what most of us strive to be? Got news, it's the rich that employ people and give them benefits - not the poor. I find the number of homes he has irrelevant.

I don't think either canidate it best suited for the title of president. It is just picking the lesser of two evils and well that's a scary thought to me. I could care less how many homes either one of them has. Obama's comment is just another of his cheap attempts to get more votes. He's not exactly an "average American" either. He's got money or he wouldn't be able to keep his campaign going. And frankly, Obama and his ideals and thinking scare me. Not that I'll for for McCain either, but at least he doesn't scare me. smilies/cry.gif
We might as well write in a vote for Mickey Mouse as president - he couldn't do any worse than the two jokers running for the job. smilies/kiss.gif

Not revealing the number of houses owned is just another of the arrogant habits of "The Artful Dodger"... It is very condescending of him to think he can get away with it.
McCain's 5 Houses

This should not even be an issue. The homes are his wife's anyway. McCain knows hardship and America knows it or have they conveniently forgotten due to political poking.

I find it appalling that a man cannot remember how many houses he owns! What will he forget when he is the President? He really thinks that his pow experience will win everyone over. However, I beg to differ. He wasn't the only pow in the world. Some have never been found and many died while in captivity. Obviously he didn't die or get lost and came back fairly well intact. Well enough to end a marriage and hook up with a younger, beautiful blonde with lots of money. I also am not that impressed with his credentials as a politician. I absolutely agree that if McCain gets into office, it will be an extension of GW Bush. I don't want to see that happen. It will be at least another 4 years of hell.

If I was married to someone who inherited 100 million and by a pre nuptial agreement has always kept separate investments, I probably would not react very different than he did...or John Kerry did. Who cares?
Most properties in that marriage belong to her and will probably be left to their children.
If, on the other hand, I had obtain my only house by having some "friend" now in jail buy it and resell it to me at a lower price, I would be worry as Sen Obama might be.

McCain record in the Senate
written by Barabar, August 26, 2008
For the person who noted Congress is where things have to get done:check out McCain's voting record: the worst! For all his POW talk, his votes AGAINST vets! Check it out..DAV (Disabled Vets gives him a rating of 34% and Obama 89%!
He is old, angry and stuck in the past.
for those of you who don;t like either candidate: lookat the issues and vote for the policies that will help you and most Americans. If you do your homework, you will probabaly pick Obama. If you go with McCain, well...lucky you: you must be rich!!
How many houses?
written by Carlon, August 26, 2008
When I heard him say that I thought it was a good way to say, "It's none of your business."
How many houses will the capitalist Americans have if Obama has his way? Less. Because our taxes will be so high paying for everybody's everything as is done in socialist countries. Canada tax bracket 55%, same ballpark as United Kingdom. Our top bracket is now 38%. It's a tough pill to swallow for the people busting their butts to make things better for themselves and their families. I believe we need to help those who CANNOT help themselves, but I'm tired already of paying for those who just don't want to work and leach off of the government, aka taxpayers. Some people act as though they think the government has a money tree behind the Whitehouse. Guess what...those taxpayer dollars come from hard working people.
I don't care how much money the candidate has. What poor presidential candidates have you heard of in the last century? Barack and some like him act as though being rich or having more money than many others is a sin. That type of thinking looks like jealousy and wanting what the richer guy has without having to have worked or it. Did Hillary work for her bucks! She got her start with family bucks. Let the Lord be our judge.

How Many Houses Does Obama Have?
written by Carlon, August 26, 2008
One? That might mean that he just hasn't invested in real estate. Real estate has historically been one of the best investment vehicles. It shows me that Obama might not be the best money manager. Has anyone looked at he candidates' credit scores?

To me it means he wanted to be sure of giving the right answer. Since he owns several houses that relatives live in, it's understandable he wasn't sure. At least with his money he's helping his relatives who need the assistance...I see no problem. All of our members of Congress are rich...compared to most of us!
Can you relate?

I do not blame McCain for having seven houses but if you cannot keep up with the number of houses you own how can you keep up with the number of troops are in a particular country or employees in a Agency???

The McCain campaign is calling Obama an elitist. Now tell me having multiple homes, extensive staff to manage those homes, and ability to learn how to fly (which Cindy McCain did) is not "elitist". I want someone in the white house that supports my right to chose what I will do with my body, who will bring our troops home (and by the way who made the correct choice to begin with) who will support a much fairer tax code, and sees health care as a right for all citizen not just an expensive option for those who can afford it. Don't you?
All Senators are 'elitists'
written by Common and broke, August 26, 2008
Senators all make more than the average American and some keep their 'day' jobs or have businesses that bring in money while they are in Washington. Only millionaires have enough money to finish the race. I think it is a sad state of affairs that we don't have common men/women representing the common American. But maybe McCain owns houses as an investment? Then it would seem reasonable that if someone else is doing the buying and selling of them for him while he's in office, that he might reasonably not know how many he has at a given 'off the cuff' time.

McCain doesn't have a clue what being middle class is all about. He's a fake. He also said he would run a clean campaign - not swiftboating. Well everyone knows that's a crock. He's a total sleeze bag.

written by Scratch, August 28, 2008
Maybe John doesn't know how many "he" owns. His wife may not be letting him know what ones he is allowed to say are his. There are many ways to look at things. Maybe his wife has been buying houses and apparently she did if they have 7, it may be confusing and he wants to be accurate so he isn't giving an answer until he is sure. What's hers is hers but what hers may not be his so he is being careful not to say something is his when it isn't. Mrs. McCain may have houses that John doesn't know about, and if he says one number and it is wrong he will be accused of being a liar later.
How much do you pay in taxes?
written by Carlon, August 28, 2008
I don't care how many houses a candidate owns or if he knows how many in which he has invested. It would be very easy for someone with real estate investment portfolios of any size to NOT know exactly how many houses they have at any given time, given deals in the making, waiting for closings, having your investment advisor handling things. Also, as Scratch mentioned, how many does Mr. McCain own and how many do Mrs. McCain own?
What I want to know is this...I want to know how much the candidates (and all of the Federal politicians for that matter) paid in income taxes. That tells me a lot more.
I want to know who is voting for which tax laws and from which laws these politicians are benefiting.
I seriously doubt that Hillary is paying more taxes than I do, same with Obama and possibly McCain.
A candidate would be irresponsible to NOT know how much they paid in income taxes.

and, I want a candidate who is fiscally responsible. Have you seen how many of these politicians who are handling our tax dollars treat their own credit? How many have filed for bankruptcy and have generally bad credit? You wouldn't lend them money, but there they are handling all of our money! Vote those suckers outta there!
How much do they pay in taxes?
written by Carlon, August 28, 2008
From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan and NBC's Mark Murray
The Obamas released their 2007 tax return, which shows they earned more than $4 million -- which is a sizable increase from past filings (almost all of which comes from sales of his books).
Per the campaign, here are the highlights:
Total income: $4,238,165
Adjusted gross income: $4,139,965
Salaried income: $260,735
Net profit from books: $3,943,378
Federal taxes paid: $1,396,772
Total charitable contributions for 2007: $240,370

Here's a link to Hillary and Bill's info, although they filed an extension and we don't know how much of what they've paid they'll get as a refund: http://www.scribd.com/doc/2442...o_friend=1
