Ankle Monitors & Truancy
Two Cents - Your Two Cents!

Court officials in San Antonio have announced a pilot program where 50 of the district's most truant students will wear ankle monitors with GPS systems in them to try to deter the wayward students from skipping school. Many feel this will help authorities curb this problem, but others feel that this method is infringing on the rights of the students.

Question: Does using ankle monitor and GPS technology to keep kids in school infringe on their privacy after school hours?

Good Luck with That

Regardless of whether it infringes on their privacy, it's a waste of time and money. If those kids don't want to be there, they WON'T be there. You might see their bodies in their seats, but their minds will be somewhere else.

While there have always been students who just do not want to be there to learn, I truly believe that if parents would teach their children the importance of school and put a higher priority on it, fewer kids would skip. Parents and teachers need to work together in developing rules and consequences of attendance. Ankle monitors should be saved for those kids who are also breaking the law while skipping.
Truancy

I firmly believe that it will help get truancy numbers down if children learn that they are being kept track of in a more effective manner. You just have to make sure that the teachers don't start making excuses up for the children like "I sent him to McDonald's to get me some lunch." That was one of the rules when someone in a teacher of mine's class. It would be ok to skip his class as long as you brought him something back from wherever you were going. Not exactly a good example.

i AM 69 AND USED TO SKIP SCHOOL AND THAT MIGHT HAVE STOPPED ME FROM DOING IT BUT I DON'T KNOW, BUT AS INFRINGING ON STUDENT RIGHTS THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE IN SCHOOL AND THATS WHERE THEY NEED TO BE. RIGHTS OR NO RIGHTS.

It would infringe on their rights if the practice does not contribute to a sane development of their personalities. What is important is to avoid frustration.
put bracelet where the sun don't shine!

Why don't we just implant a microchip at birth and that way the Government can keep tabs on us from Day 1. God knows that we are going to screw up so might as well put the Government in charge right off the bat. Communism is alive. First things first: you didn't put an age in the article so it appears to me that you must have been out of school when the english class was meeting, are you wearing an ankle bracelet still? You didn't tell whether it is male or female. You didn't give any details about the school and if it is a good one or one where there is a lot of violence. Hey man! Kids will be kids. Didn't you ever skip school. If they have a reason to miss it might be a learning experience. When they go back all you have to do is give them plenty of homework to do and tell them they will get much less if they stay in school. There are ways to get kids to stay in school. It must be a boring school or they would be showing up. There may be some lousy teachers at the school. There can be a lot of problems that is leading these kids to miss. It is not common for large groups of kids to miss so I would be looking at changing the school before I treat the kids like Axe Murderers. You don't have ankle bracelets on every criminal in history so why do it to kids. Grow up and use your mind. Make them want to be there!

Education is not just a right but a privilege. You have a right to an education but it's up to you to take advantage of it. You can't force a person to learn. If they are sitting in class with an ankle bracelet on, they are just going to disrupt or distract. Let's spend our money on the kids who want to learn. Don't waste tax dollars on forcing kids to attend school.

This is one to ponder. Having spent many years working with juveniles(those committed by the courts for law violations)I understand the need to make the kids responsible for their actions. If other avenues to resolve the problem, including student, parent, teacher, administration, and even law inforcement, then the ankle bracelet may be appropriate. BUT....if that fails and they still are truant, then what will be the consequence? The consequence of inappropriate behavior will result in...???... And uless the consequence is worse, why follow the rules? That is the real problem today. NO consequences for inappropriate behaviors. Everyone should be able to do whatever they want, when they want. No respect for right or wrong. But there has to be a right and a wrong. I know that the behaviors displayed in schools today are WRONG. But without consequences it will not change.

Just as adults are not forced to work at a certain job, schooling should not be compulsory - not in a free society. Where is it written in stone that children "belong" in school, for 12 years, and 180 days a year? Where did that come from and why is it so accepted without question? Most people don't know the history of compulsory education. The first compulsory schooling legislation occured in Massachusetts in 1852 and then over the next 30 years spread to 19 other states and territories. It started as 10 to 12 weeks per year for ages 9 to 12 and then was gradually expanded. All compulsory schooling was met with strenuous opposition. In fact, the first children were escorted to school at gunpoint (the government's gunpoint). To learn more read, _The Underground History of American Education, A Schoolteacher's Intimate Investigation Into the Problem of Modern Schooling_, by John Taylor Gatto, former New York State & New York City Teacher of the Year. It's an eye opener.
