According to a New York Times survey, most Americans agree that illegal immigration is a very serious problem in this country. The new Arizona law has brought to light some very basic differences of opinion among our people that show few signs of reconciliation. The Times survey of 1079 respondents, presumably New Yorkers, indicates these differing views are more generational than political, that folks over the age of 45 tend to support the new Arizona law, while younger people are more likely to favor a "welcome all" approach to immigration. In an effort to begin to understand and resolve our differences, Daily Cents would like to conduct our own, heartland survey. Question: Do you believe the Arizona law is a step in the right direction for immigration reform in this country, or a major step backwards? And (if you don't mind telling), what is your age and political affiliation? |

National and statewide political leaders watched their powerfully endorsed candidates get a swift kick in the pants Tuesday in two separate primaries. Pennsylvania Republican-turned-Democratic Senator Arlen Specter lost to Republican Joe Sestak -- despite being the chosen one of almost every big-name Democrat. Kentucky Republican Senate fast-tracked-to-win nominee Trey Grayson was unseated before he sat down by Tea Party pick, Rand Paul (son of Texas Republican, Ron Paul). Plus, Arkansas Senator Blanche Lincoln unexpectedly failed to ward off a challenge from the liberal wing of the Democratic Party and will have to face Lt. Governor Bill Halter again in a primary runoff. It appears to be open season on political incumbents, and powerful endorsements from both major parties have so far failed to help three of their primary candidates win. Question: Do you think the results of these elections are anti-Democrat, anti-Republican, anti-incumbent or anti-establishment? |

A couple of months ago, we asked your opinion regarding the decision of Central Falls High School to fire their entire staff in an effort to turn the poor performing school around. This move gained the support of President Obama for promoting accountability. Yesterday, the district reached an agreement with the union to return all the previously fired staffers to their jobs. The two sides said a so-called transformation plan for Central Falls High School for the coming school year would allow the 87 teachers, guidance counselors, librarians and other staffers who were to lose their jobs at the end of this year to return without having to reapply. The agreement also imposes a longer school day, more after-school tutoring and other changes. Question: Do you think it is possible for the school to effectively turn-around with the same staff in place? |

"I need a freakin' job." That's the message President Obama saw as he arrived in Buffalo, N.Y., yesterday for an event talking up the administration's success in creating new jobs. He also pitched Congress on approving a $30 billion credit for small-business growth. Yet critics say Obama has been focusing his recovery efforts too narrowly and hasn't done enough to help people find work. The latest job figures show 9.9 percent of the country still out of work. That inspired a group of unemployed Buffalo residents to appeal to the president in the form of a billboard along the route his motorcade took into town. Question: Do you think that President Obama is doing enough to stimulate job growth in our country? |
