Banning the Burqa
Your Two Cents!

This week, the French parliament is debating a controversial bill that would ban "burqa-style veils" in public, despite the fact that out of at least 5 million Muslims in France, only about 1,900 wear the face-covering veil. France is no stranger to secular battles: In 2004, all "conspicuous" religious symbols were banned from the nation's schools. In 2009, President Nicolas Sarkozy spoke out against the burqa: "The burqa is not a sign of religion, it is a sign of subservience. It will not be welcome on the territory of the French republic." Burqas have become a hot-button topic across Europe. So far, Belgium has adopted a veil ban, and Spain is moving toward a burqa ban in government buildings. In Barcelona, burqas will soon be forbidden in public buildings. But while the burqa may symbolize the oppression of women to some non-Muslims, for the women who wear the burqa, the veil may be the only way to exercise their limited freedom.

Question: What do you think about banning the burqa - is it a statement against oppression or does it violate one's right to practice religion?

The Lindsay Lohan Saga Continues...
Your Two Cents!

Actress Lindsay Lohan was ordered Tuesday to serve 90 days in jail for missing alcohol counseling sessions in violation of her probation. The judge also ordered Lohan to spend 90 days in a drug and alcohol rehab program after her jail term is completed. After the judge ruled that Lohan had violated her probation in a 2007 drunken driving conviction by missing weekly alcohol counseling sessions, Lohan began sobbing as she addressed the court. "I did do everything that I was told to do and did the best I could," she said. And in another strange twist to this ongoing saga, Lohan had painted "F*** You" on one of her fingernails for the trial.

Question: Do you agree with the sentence that was handed down to Lindsay Lohan?

The Single Logo
Your Two Cents!

OK Daily Cents readers, we want your opinion on something that is not necessarily making headlines, but has become a topic of discussion in our office as of late....

Fact: The Grateful Dead has the dancing bears, Jimmy Buffett's Parrotheads have the fins, the gay community has the Rainbow Triangle to show their pride and of course, many individuals out there identify with sports figures and teams through the proud wearing of logos.

Fact: Unless you have been living under a rock for the past decade you are probably well aware of the phenomenal success that online dating services like eHarmony.com, Match.com and Jdate.com have experienced. Much of their success can be attributed to the idea that you can "choose" potential dates and get to know them in the privacy of your own home on your computer without having to go on the dreaded blind date.

Question: If there was a symbol or logo that represented the statement "I'm single and looking!", do you think people would wear/display it? Would you be willing to put a bumper sticker on your car or wear a pin with the symbol? Let us know what you think...

The Fate of Michael Steele
Your Two Cents!

Republicans have lined up on opposite sides over comments by Michael Steele, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, that the Afghanistan war launched by former President George W. Bush was "of (President Barack) Obama's choosing" and may be unwinnable. Speaking from Afghanistan, GOP Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina lambasted Michael Steele for the comments, which McCain called "wildly inaccurate" and Graham characterized as "uninformed, unnecessary, unwise, untimely," while fellow Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina said Steele should apologize to the military.

Prominent Republican voices are calling for Steele's resignation, including Liz Cheney, a former State Department official and the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney; Weekly Standard editor William Kristol and former South Carolina GOP chairman Katon Dawson, who finished second to Steele in the RNC chairman's race last year. Both McCain and Graham questioned Steele's ability to keep his job, but said it was up to Steele and the RNC to make that decision.

Question: Do you think Steele should keep his job or should he resign?

Michael Douglas' Wall Street Divorce Drama
Your Two Cents!

Before there was Catherine Zeta Jones there was Diandra Douglas. After making over $45 Million from her divorce from Michael Douglas in 2000, Diandra is now looking to score half his pay check from his new movie Wall Street - Money Never Sleeps. According to the agreement the couple signed in 2000, there is a clause that entitles Diandra to 50 percent of any earnings Michael receives from any movies he did — including residuals, merchandising and ancillary rights — during their 23-year marriage. According to Diandra's lawyers, that provision includes any "spinoffs" of Douglas' movies.

If you are wondering why Diandra is pushing for this, it seems she was a woman scorned, at least in her own words.  During their divorce she claimed Michael was a philanderer who loved boozing it up. We suppose there wasn't a pre-nup in place as their divorce settlement is ranked number 8 on the Forbes list for most expensive Hollywood divorces. Not only did Diandra walk away with $45 Million, she also scored their homes in Beverly Hill and Majorca.

Question: Do you think the Diandra is entitled to earnings from Douglas' new Wall Street movie?
