This past Monday, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a new policy statement on choking prevention for children, recommending, among other things, changes in government oversight of food choking hazards, and asking food manufacturers to consider redesigning potentially dangerous food products, such as hot dogs and hard candies. In the U.S., 10,000 children ages 14 and younger visit the emergency room due to food-related choking each year, and between 66 to 77 children age 10 and younger die each year from food-related choking. According to one study cited in the report, 17% of food-related choking deaths involve hot dogs.
Question: Do you think hot dogs should be "redesigned"? |

The White House is pushing for the first new nuclear plants in the United States in three decades. Last week, President Obama announced $8.3 billion in loan guarantees for adding two nuclear reactors at an existing plant in Burke County, Georgia, near Augusta. Stewart Brand, the founder and editor of the Whole Earth Catalog, has long been opposed to nuclear power (like for 30 years!). Until now, that is. Looking for a surefire way to cut greenhouse gases, Brand said the alternative to burning coal has become clear: "We already had a very good supplier of ...electricity. It works like mad and is as clean as it could be -- and that is nuclear. Question: Do you think the US should aggressively pursue nuclear power or do you think it is too dangerous? |

It has now come to light that Toyota's top North American executive boasted of the compny saving $100 million by negotiating a limited recall for Toyota Camry and Lexus ES cars over a problem that could cause unintended acceleration. In an internal Toyota document used as part of a company presentation on its government relations, dated July 6, 2009, the phrase "Negotiated 'equipment' recall on Camry/ES re: [sudden acceleration], saved $100 million+ with no defect found" is among a bullet-pointed list of "wins." Question: Will Toyota be able to rebound from the damage that has been done to their brand? |

When film director Kevin Smith was recently kicked off a flight because of his size, he focused his anger on Southwest, but the incident put the spotlight on all airlines and their heavy passenger policies.
The weight issue has been a delicate one as airlines try to respond to concerns from both large passengers and those who next to them. "It's embarrassing -- airlines don't want to touch this with a 20-foot pole," said Rick Seaney, CEO of Farecompare.com, an airfare comparison shopping site. "[But] this is only going to get worse." A third of Americans are now classified as obese, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association, but the width of a coach airplane seat has changed little, remaining between 17 and 18 inches in most commercial planes. Question: Do you think that overweight people should be forced to buy two seats on a plane? |

Tomorrow, Tiger Woods will address a gathering of "friends, family and close colleagues" at the PGA Headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Agent Mark Steinberg said Woods would not answer any questions. It will be the golfer's first public appearance since his November 27 car crash outside his home near Orlando, Florida.
According to Steinberg: "Tiger Woods will be speaking to a small group of friends, colleagues and close associates. Tiger plans to discuss his past and his future and he intends to apologize for his behavior. While Tiger feels that what happened is fundamentally a matter between him and his wife, he also recognizes that he has hurt and let down a lot of other people who were close to him. He also let down his fans. He wants to begin the process of making amends, and that's what he's going to discuss." Steinberg said he didn't know if Woods' wife, Elin Nordegren, would appear with her husband. Question: Do you think that Elin should appear with her husband? |
