Like many women my age I have fantasized about getting a face lift. I’ve stood in front of the mirror with my hands on either side of my face and gently pulled the skin back to its pre-fortysomething place. The results in the mirror look pretty good – but walking around with my hands planted firmly in front of my ears isn’t a long term solution. Beating the clock needs lots of sharp instruments, including scalpels and needles and/or pharmaceuticals that paralyze or plump.
When I get bouts of what can only be called face-lift lust, I drag out the cards of doctors my friends “swear by” and sit by the phone thinking about making an appointment.
Or at least I used to. After reading “Pursuit of youth isn’t always pretty,” loathing joined fear as a reaction to the idea.
Results are not guaranteed – to be good. As a matter of fact, they can be really bad. Take a look at the before and after of Priscilla Presley in the article – but not on a full stomach. Adding insult to injury, fixing a bad procedure can leave you looking even worse. Oh, and living to use your new face isn’t guaranteed either. I know you have to suffer for beauty, but for me that means waxing my eyebrows, not dying.
I took heart from the images of Susan Sarandon and Ellen Barkin, two of the people that Dr. Tony Youn, the board certified plastic surgeon who reviewed the pictures, felt hadn’t had a face lift. They are beautiful women who wear it well.
