That’s "Doctor" Living Rock Legend to You

Oh, I love this: Brian May, who wrote “We Will Rock You”(an anthem played, I’ll admit, with nauseating frequency at sporting events) and sang the bass parts of “Bohemian Rhapsody” as a member of the seminal band Queen, completed his doctorate in astrophysics last year at Imperial College in London and has written Bang! A Complete History of the Universe, a book on the beginning of time.

So much for the conventional wisdom of the time that rock ‘n’ roll musicians were n’er do wells who, as Dire Straits so succinctly put it, get their money for nothing and their chicks for free.

(By the way, May wasn’t the only college boy who was lured by the siren song of rock ‘n’ roll: Mick Jagger -- London School of Economics -- dropped out too. Jagger, as far as I know, did not return to univesity. Although one could argue that he applied whatever economic lessons he learned very, very well. )

But aside from blasting yet another assumption out of the water, Dr. May’s experience is telling other ways: Thirty-five years ago, when Queen started to gain traction, May withdrew from his study of astrophysics. After three or so decades, he returned to his pre-rock god first love: astral bodies, the origins of the universe and the beginning of time.

Which proves there’s a second (or third) career out there for all of us.
