Back in the 90s, 1996 to be exact, a movie called The First Wives Club starring Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, and Goldie Hawn made the female divorcee an archetype.  Meet the 2.0 version of the The First Wives Club: FirstWivesWorld.com, a community run for and by divorced women. Their motto is that you are never alone in a place complete with new friends, experts, services, news, and entertainment. Sounds about right. 

On the service-y side of the site, it’s broken down into stages of contemplating divorce, navigating divorce, and moving beyond divorce. The experts and resource section feels like having a gaggle of your closest and savviest friends doling out great advice.

There’s a Q&A about personal finance that covers all those sticky money issues that inevitably surface when two people merge and then unmerge their assets. Then there’s a piece about getting financially unstuck after a divorce that walks you through the four steps of getting a handle on your finances. And it’s not all bank accounts, credit scores, and tax returns – it’s also about getting back out there, something  you shouldn’t do before reading this Q&A about online dating.

But here’s the really unique property of the site – Hot Flashes, a blog that reads more like a television series and is billed as “a risqué and compassionate look at women in the middle of their lives.” It’s written by Mimi Schmir, who has worked on Grey’s Anatomy, Felicity, and Party of Five. The show follows Esme, think Carrie Bradshaw after she’s been through a divorce, who discovers many things, like that her ex-husband spent over $100,000 on prostitutes, which is chronicled in Episode 17: Eliot Spitzer Stupid.

Being part of the First Wives World is definitely better than the Club.
