After hearing about Trish Walsh-Smith's YouTube video in which she rants about her pending divorce from Broadway theater magnate Philip Smith, I had to jump on the site and see it for myself. Wow - and to think I actually thought we had made strides in dashing the notion that women tend to be vindictive and prone to hysterics...
I actually found myself wincing as she flipped through her wedding album and took pot shots at family members, talked about her "mean stepdaughter", and in a particularly horrifying moment, dialed her husband's office where she started talking to his personal assistant about their sex life (or lack thereof).
The part that makes me scratch my head is that she willingly signed a pre-nuptial contract which gives her an annual stipend of $500,000 and the couple's Florida home. The bulk of his estate is designated for his daughters from his first marriage.
Having been through a divorce myself, I am fully aware of the feelings of anger, betrayal, and deep sadness that accompany the process. However, I found myself wanting to reach through the monitor and slap this woman and tell her that she is doing nothing to help herself by making her pain and humiliation public in this manner. Indeed, she does look like a ranting, vindictive woman who is trying anything possible to get her way.
I know there are probably plenty of people out there who will completely disagree with me on this issue and will use Mr. Smith's overall worth as proof that Trish is entitled to more. However, I think the only lesson to be learned here is that if you need to sign a pre-nup, be sure your attorney has your best interests in hand, and don't let yourself be so blinded by love that you don't make a good, clear decision for yourself. And if you do find yourself in the unfortunate position of "splitting the sheets," please don't air that dirty laundry on YouTube.
