I'm sure there isn't a woman out there who doesn't have a piece of jewelry that was given to her by an ex-boyfriend or ex-husband or ex-something. In the midst of the break-ups, we tend to cling to these baubles (as in, you may be breaking my heart, but you WILL NOT take my jewelry!). However, as times goes on, most of these items nest quietly unused at the bottom of our jewelry boxes.
And I will admit, there have been moments where I look at these items and become defiant about not wearing them. Not too long ago, I put on a pair of diamond earrings from my ex. As I put them on, I thought to myself, "These are great earrings - there is no reason why I shouldn't wear them. I have no attachment to him anymore!" However, strangely enough, about midday, I took them off and put them in my purse (where they stayed for a few weeks until I returned them to their resting place in the depths of the jewelry box). They felt tainted (that may seem silly, but that's the only word I can think of to describe it) and I know without a doubt that I will never wear them again.
So imagine my delight when I heard about ExBoyfriendJewelry.com. This great site where you can not only sell these banished items, but also tell your break-up story (in the ExBFBlog), is the brainchild of Megahn Perry and her step-mom Marie. They hatched the idea for the site at the dinner table one night after Megahn had visited local pawn shops and consignment stores to see about selling her "ex" jewelry. It is a fun looking site with some cool features. My favorite is the Good Karma Fund. After you have made a little money on your sale, you can donate a portion of it to the Susan G. Komen Foundation (brilliant ladies!).
I'm not sure if I will use the site personally, but I wanted to give credit where credit is due. I think it is a great idea. So if you have some trinkets left over from past encounters, dig them out of your jewelry box and make a little moolah on them! Also, it might not hurt to drop a hint to that special someone in your life - the site is not just for women - think of the great deals guys can get on jewelry!!!
And by the way, I'm holding out for another pair of diamond earrings - minus the "icky ex factor."
