Ever on the lookout for tools to help make clear and informed decisions as Election Day approaches, I wanted to share a cool site that I came across recently. TodaysMama.com has partnered with the League of Women Voters and Sittercity.com to launch the MamaVote Project, a non-partisan, education and inspiration-based drive to encourage mothers to get involved in the political process.
You know that us "mamas" are the problem solvers, peacemakers and promoters of the public good, right? And you have to know that women hold offices in this country – from school boards to Congress, House and Senate – more than ever before. However, of 435 offices on the Federal level, only 180 are held by women. Women from all sides of the political spectrum tackle politics differently than their male counterparts, generally with more of a practical, coalition-building approach. Our country needs "mamas" in politics as never before. |

I came across a great site that has taken on the challenge of teaching today's youth about the importance of voting. The children’s virtual social site, a national non-profit organization called Woogi World™, is taking aim at adult apathy regarding the electoral process with their "Every Kid Votes" campaign that is designed to teach 2.5 million grade-schoolers the importance of participating in the voting process. Elementary children nationwide have the opportunity to learn about the right and responsibility of voting in America. Upon completion of this adventure, children will have earned the privilege to cast their ballot for either Senators Barack Obama or John McCain, with results of this vote aired in the national media. |

It has been a quick summer, and I figured this was a good time to resume my blogging duties since there are a plethora of things to chat about. The hot topic no matter where you turn this week is John McCain's pick of Sarah Palin as his running mate on the Republican ticket. Now let me say up front that I am a card-carrying Democrat. But I have always fancied myself to be one who could appreciate both sides of the Republican/Democrat argument. For instance, I have always thought John McCain to be an OK Republican - not sure I would ever vote for him, but he doesn't give me the complete willies like George W. So here is my question to the McCain camp regarding their "maverick" move in picking Palin as his running mate: Do you think that Republican boobs = Democrat boobs? You may be asking yourself what the heck I mean, so let me explain. |

All you moms out there know how it is as summer approaches: every other hour of the last two weeks of school, you are expected to be at school for a play, assembly, track meet, water play day, or the ever-popular bowling/pizza party.... By the time the last bell rings, you are even more ready for summer than your kids! My son's birthday always falls on the first weekend of summer and is usually a great kick-off for his summer vacation. However, the start of Summer '08 will probably always hold a special place in his memory (and mine!). My son and his friends decided that a sleepover at my friend's house was in order to officially ring in summer. It was during said sleepover that three boys had the brilliant idea to play a rousing game of Bouncy Ball Badminton (not really a game, but my name for it) while my friend was in the shower. |

As the mother of a sports-crazy 8-year-old, I am constantly fighting the battle of teaching my son about being a good winner, a good loser and ultimately about modeling good sportsmanship. And as those of you who follow sports know, in today's world, there are a whole lot of showboaters and a plethora of arrogance in collegiate and professional sports. Heck - we are right in the middle of Little League baseball season here, and we witness poor sportsmanship by kids and parents at almost every game!
So imagine my delight when I saw the story about the softball game between Central Washington Univerisity and Western Oregon University and the unbelievable sportsmanship that was shown during their recent game. |
