Purses Can Help Keep You in the Pink

The purse you carry can say a lot about who you are (or who you think you are) but would you be surprised to know that what’s inside your purse can say a lot about your health?

According to an article by Forbes.com, what women decide to stuff into their hobo, satchel, clutch and/or shoulder bags says a lot about how she approaches her health.

For example, your bag can be stuffed with old makeup, fistfuls of receipts and candy bars in various states of consumption; or it can have healthy snacks, vitamins and sunscreen.

Here are some of the things you should pack along with your wallet, keys and cell phone:

Important medication: Do you – or a member of your family -- have a medical condition? Keep small amounts of each important medication with you.

A copy of your health records: Huh, you say? Just type up a document that includes the basics of your health status, including the date of your last mammogram, pap smear, blood pressure and cholesterol. Include all the phone numbers of your doctors as well.

A healthy snack: Whether it’s a low-fat energy bar (some of them can have as much fat and sugar as a candy bar) or some individually-packed string cheese put a fresh snack in your purse every morning. Oh, and don’t carry around old, smashed snacks.

Birth control and condoms: For obvious reasons.

Sunscreen: Helps prevent wrinkles…and skin cancer.

Something to read: You spend a lot of time waiting, which can be frustrating. Frustration can lead to tension and stress, reading a book or magazine can help keep you relaxed.

Anti-bacterial hand gel: It’s a dirty world and viruses and germs are everywhere.

You've got to be kidding me. This approach to purses seems like the American approach to cars--get a big one and fill 'er up! My purse is a clutch slightly larger than a wallet. It contains exactly what it has room for: ID, credit cards (2), lip gloss, pen and mini note pad for all the things I have to jot down on the go, a little cash, a hair band, and my cell phone. That's it. Total. My key ring clips to the outside (and I'll grant you that IT holds a mini flashlight and a micro Leatherman multi-tool along with my car and house keys). And I still lose things in that tiny bag. Why do women feel we must drag our medicine cabinet and an array of defenses against every possible emergency around with us? Men don't do this, and they don't seem to suffer from the lack of it. Why should we? I can see where a mother would need more space, but if she kept her kids' gear in a separate bag, she might like her own purse more...just my 2 cents, naturally!
