Bet you didn’t know it was this week, right? And that’s sort of the point. Women often forget about themselves in the shuffle of worrying about kids, parents, jobs, boyfriends, and the family pets.
To ameliorate this problem, we chatted with Dr. Nieca Goldberg, director of the NYU Women’s Heart Program in New York City. She’s also the author of The Women's Healthy Heart Program and a recently released book called Dr. Nieca Goldberg’s Complete Guide to Women’s Health. Health sage Dr. Goldberg dishes up what every woman needs to know about staying healthy this week and the next and the next...
• A healthy lifestyle is about dealing with your whole life in moderation. There is no "save your life diet", says Dr. Goldberg. “It’s about five to seven servings of fruits and vegetables a day, low-fat dairy products, a handful of nuts three times a week, and reducing the amount of processed sugar in your diet.” • You are your own best advocate. Dr. Goldberg says the first part of learning to take care of yourself is communicating with your doctor about your health problem. Dr. Goldberg says your doctor is one person you probably want to over-share with. With a doctor, no topic can be off-limits. “I see a lot of patients who show up without medical records because they are too embarrassed to ask for them.” • Find a reliable source of information. Dr. Goldberg’s biggest concern is the stew of information women receive about their health. “Women are often very confused about the direction to take for their health. I see them as very mistrusting of a lot of the news they are receiving. Find a doctor you feel comfortable communicating with and use that person to vet any questions you have about information you are receiving.” • Three things that should be in every woman’s diet: Broccoli, salmon, and calcium.
